Conferencing with Students, A Few Tips- These are notes I took while reading a book by Laura Robb.
Students should feel comfortable in filling out self-evaluations of their learning.
A place to sign up for conferences should be in a prominent place in the classroom. You can
label the area "Need Immediately" or "Need a 10-Minute Conference". Students should write down or check off specific skills they
want to focus on in these conferences.
Teachers should circulate the room. It is wise and essential to keep anecdotal records. See which students need
guidance in which areas.
You may want to hold a conference with a group focusing on a skill.
You may want to find mentors in specific areas, sometimes utilizing these mentors to help teach strategies.
Partner Book Conferences (Laura Robb)- Each student in the partner book conference can read what he or she desires. You have to focus on something
specific in your conference, though. Discuss author's purpose or theme or explain how text features brighten the book.
After conferring with a student, place sticky notes as reminders on his or her journal or piece of writing.
