Ms. Jasztal's Cranium Commanders

This is a club for those who want to go above and beyond the normal classroom expectations. You can earn up to 100 points (111 if you have Extra Credit points). When you earn 15 points, you will make it on the list of the Cranium Commanders Hall of Fame, where your name will be on our classroom website for years to come. A surprise at the end of the year awaits those who have earned at least Gold status. Ultimate Commanders get an ULTIMATE surprise.

Member Levels
Entry Level Member- 1-14 stars
Bronze- 15-24 stars (You are inducted into the Hall of Fame starting at this level.)
Silver- 25-39 stars
Gold- 40-49 stars
Platinum- 50-59 stars
Co-Pilot- 60- 70 stars
Ultimate Commander- 70-111 stars (this includes BONUS questions)

Cranium Commanders is COMING BACK for the 2010-2011 school year! It has not been used since the 2006-2007 year.

Language Arts/Reading
1. Come up with ten "million dollar words" and write them correctly in ten sentences.
2. Provide me with five examples of onomatopoeia.
3. Provide me with five examples of alliteration.
4. Score 100% on two spelling tests to earn one point (four for two points, etc.)
5. Name the four types of sentences and provide an example of each.
6. Give two examples of simile.
7. Give two examples of metaphor.
8. Write a story for National Novel Writing Month.
9. Write a story or letter to someone about living in the colonial times.
10. Score 100% on a week of Daily Language Practice (DLP) exercises.
11. Name five books that have earned the Newbery Medal. Scholastic Page|Complete List from ALA
12. Name five books that have earned the Caldecott Medal. Complete List from ALA
13. Tell me the names of five authors who have written Newbery Medal award books.
14. Write down the names of three types of medals books can receive besides the Newbery and Caldecott Medal. Literary and Related Awards
15. Take a Reading Counts test for a book that is worth at least 10 points.
16. Take a Reading Counts test for any book that has received the Newbery medal.
17. Come to me and spell (without looking) onomatopoeia.
18. Come to me and spell (without looking) abecedarian, which means beginner. It is the hardest challenge word on your spelling list all year long.
19. Write sentences that include your challenge words for the week. You must use the words correctly in the sentence.
20. For a featured book I read in class (for example, The Indian in the Cupboard or The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe), come up and tell me the names of main characters, three major events that take place in the story, and the setting. You may not look at notes.
21. Bring your Hernando County public library card to school and prove to me that you have one.
22. Write down five questions you would ask a character in a book you read.
23. Play the Word Jungle game online, and either print out (if you’re doing this at home) or show me the page that tells you that you found Tukka’s treasure.
24. Go to Vocabulary Builder (grades 4-6). Write down their featured word, its definition, examples, and synonyms.

Math
25. Write down five geometry-related words and their definitions.
26. Write down how to find the perimeter of a rectangle.
27. Write down the words for the Order of Operations or "PEMDAS".
28. Write down Roman Numerals for the numbers 1, 5, 9, 10, 11, 15, 19, 20, 21, 50, and 100.
29. Solve a Brain Buster on Mrs. Renz’s fourth grade website and be mentioned for getting the answer correct for the week! (Begins the first week in September every year)
30. Write down the names of the place values from the thousandths to the hundred millions.
31. Draw these sided figures (look under P- polyhedron)- triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, heptagon, octagon, nonagon, decagon, and dodecagon.
32. Sketch these three-dimensional figures- cone, cylinder, pyramid, rectangular prism, and sphere.
33. Write down how many minutes there are in a half-hour, hour, day, week, and month with 30 days.
34. Brooksville is located approximately 234 miles from St. Augustine, 247 miles from Jacksonville, 320 miles from Tallahassee, 515 miles from Pensacola, and 446 miles from Key West. Write down how many hours it would take to drive to each of these cities.
35. Write down numbers that have digits up to the hundreds, one thousands, hundred thousands, one millions, and hundred millions.
36. In Hernando County, the population in 1980 was 44,469. In 1990, it was 101,115. In 2000, it was 130,802. In 2004, it was 149,704. By how much did it increase from one year to another? You should have four answers.

43. Write down five of Thomas Edison's patents (inventions).
44. Write down ten inventions that would have never been possible without electricity.
45. Tell me (without looking) the planets in order from the Sun.
46. Name ten bones in the skeletal system of the Human Body.
47. Write down the names of our two layers of skin.
48. Name five types of energy and an example for each.
49. Write down five ways in which one can conserve electricity.
50. Write down the definitions of reflection and refraction. Explain how they are different.
51. Write down five ways in which one can prepare for a hurricane. (Another site- Protect Your Home From Disaster)
52. Name three habitats of the Florida Everglades as well as two species of animals you can find in each habitat.
53. Tell me (without looking) three of the differences between Earth and Mars.
54. Tell me (without looking) the three main types of rock.
55. Write down the five categories of hurricanes and the mile per hour wind range for each one.
56. Write down the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning.
57. Write down the phases of the moon.
58. Complete one of the science experiments mentioned on our site at home. Take pictures and/or have a parent signature to verify that you completed this experiment.

Florida History- Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow
59. Name the state symbols of Florida.
60. Write down the names of four explorers that explored the coast of Florida as well as a sentence each about their accomplishments.
61. Name five forts located in Florida.
62. Name the three cities that have been capitols of Florida.
63. Name ten counties located in Florida.
64. Name three counties located in southern Florida (see #63's link).
65. Name three counties located in northern Florida (see #63's link).
66. Name Florida's two state senators.
67. Write down at least two main differences between the House of Representatives and the Senate.
68. Write down three of Florida's state parks that permit camping.

In The Classroom- You automatically earn one point if you:

  • Are chosen as Student of the Month.
  • Are inducted into the 100% Homework Club for any quarter. (You can earn four points for the entire year!)
  • Receive straight As for any of the four quarters. (You can earn four points for the entire year!)
  • Read a Sunshine State Reader book to compete in Battle of the Books (You can earn over 10-12 points this way.)
